Muzzle training – getting it right!

Muzzle training is an important tool in any dog walker’s toolbox and an extra service to offer clients.

If properly introduced, conditioned and fitted a muzzle has many positive benefits when walking dogs.
  • Most people think that a muzzle is there just to protect people, but this is not the only reason. A muzzle can also protect the dog you are walking, especially if they are anxious. Usually, when people see a dog with a muzzle on, they tend to move themselves (and their own dog if they are walking one) away from you, avoiding getting too close and causing anxiety.
  • Wearing a muzzle also protects other dogs, wildlife and may be required when visiting the vet.
  • A muzzle does also protect people but remember, a muzzle ‘punch’ from a larger dog can cause significant injury.
  • It gives the walker more confidence and is great for dogs who scavenge whilst out walking.
  • If your clients are planning to travel with their dog, there are many places that require a dog to be muzzled such as ferries, public transport abroad etc. Better to have their dog already conditioned and ready to wear a muzzle happily rather than find themselves trying to put one on a reluctant dog whilst they are travelling, risking behaviour issues around muzzles going forward.
  • It is currently the law for Bull breeds and other banned breeds to wear a muzzle.
